| Gates of the Arctic National Park |
When in the late 1920s forester and explorer Robert Marschall travelled the Koyukuk river country from the golddigger town Wiseman he reached a stunning place on the North Fork of the Koyukuk river. The mountains on either side came close together, narrowing the valley. To the north between the mountains Marshall could see the continental divide. He called this place the Gates of the Arctic. In 1980 this became the name for the entire new national park. Our trekking leads us from Wiseman through the wilderness of the Brooks Range to this Gate. We reach Wiseman by van along the Dalton highway from Fairbanks. Our trek takes 5 days walking about 6 hours a day. At the Gates one can fly back to Wiseman by bushplane or continue by canoe for another four days to the small town Bettles and fly to Fairbanks from there. A great way to discover an exciting part of the Gates of the Arctic National Park.
